2026 World Cup Group B delivers a fascinating mix of tournament experience, host nation status, and underdog ambition to pull off upsets. On paper, Switzerland are the most heavily favoured side to finish top of the group. However, Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Qatar all have solid cause to fight for qualification spots to the Round of 32.

There are no global football giants in Group B, but this even balance of power will only ramp up the tension and competitiveness of all matches.

Even with Switzerland as the tipped side, the battle in Group B is expected to remain tight right through until the final round of fixtures.

Switzerland Enter As Group Favourites

Switzerland head into the 2026 World Cup sitting 19th in the FIFA Rankings, the highest position of any team in Group B. Murat Yakin's squad also holds a proven track record of consistency at major tournaments, having qualified for five consecutive World Cup finals.

Their qualification run to the North American tournament was equally impressive. Switzerland finished top of their UEFA qualification group without a single defeat, finishing ahead of Sweden, Slovenia and Kosovo.

Four wins and two drawn results stand as proof of this team's stable performance, as they now target a fourth successive run to the World Cup knockout stages.

Switzerland's strength lies in their well-balanced squad. In defence, Manuel Akanji brings elite top-flight European match experience. Between the posts, Gregor Kobel is established as one of the most consistent goalkeepers operating in the Bundesliga.

However, the most critical figure for the side remains in midfield. Granit Xhaka will act as both the engine of their build up play and on-pitch team leader.

Alongside his duties as captain, the 33-year old remains the most influential controlling presence in the centre of the pitch.

With this combination of tournament experience, individual player quality and tactical maturity, Switzerland are fully justified as Group B's clear leading favourites.

Canada Leverage Home Nation Support

Despite Switzerland being tipped ahead of them, Canada are set to be their closest challengers. Playing in front of home crowds delivers a unique advantage, made even stronger by the fact Jesse Marsch's squad includes multiple players already established at top European clubs.

Alphonso Davies has become the face of Canadian football's rapid rise over recent years. The National Team Captain brings elite tournament experience from his career at Bayern Munich.

Canada also field a dangerous forward line including Jonathan David, Cyle Larin and Tajon Buchanan. Backed by home supporter atmosphere and this squad quality, Canada have very strong prospects to challenge Switzerland for top spot in the group.

Bosnia-Herzegovina Bring Fighting Mentality

Bosnia-Herzegovina may not be among the pre-tournament favourites, but their qualification journey for this World Cup perfectly demonstrates their resilient underdog character.

They secured their World Cup spot via the UEFA play-offs in dramatic fashion. After eliminating Wales on penalties, Bosnia pulled off a major upset by beating four-time world champions Italy, also via a penalty shootout.

Edin Dzeko's experience and leadership is the team's greatest asset. Even at 40 years old, the former elite European striker remains the central figure both inside the dressing room and out on the pitch.

Supported by other experienced internationals including Sead Kolasinac, Amar Dedic and Ermedin Demirovic, Bosnia have the potential to act as a serious disruptive force in the group standings.

Qatar Chase Back-To-Back Tournament Surprises

Qatar arrive for their second consecutive World Cup as reigning back-to-back Asian champions. While their FIFA Ranking sits below both Switzerland and Canada, Julen Lopetegui's side absolutely cannot be underestimated.

Qatar's primary threat comes in attack, through the attacking partnership of Akram Afif and Almoez Ali. The latter is recorded as one of the most prolific goalscorers in the history of the Qatar national team, with 60 goals from 126 senior international appearances.

Unlike their 2022 World Cup appearance as automatic hosts, this time Qatar earned their place via full qualification matches - a clear sign of the significant progress made by Qatari football in recent years.
