Kimi Antonelli has further solidified his status as the top favourite for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship title after dominating the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve early Monday morning. The Mercedes Junior Driver for AMG Petronas Formula One Team claimed victory in this drama-filled race, which was defined by a ferocious head-to-head duel against his own teammate George Russell.
This win marks Antonelli's fourth consecutive victory this season. With this result, Antonelli now holds a 43-point lead over Russell in the provisional 2026 Formula 1 Standings.
The race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve turned heated immediately once the starting lights went out. Russell launched well and held the early lead, but Antonelli applied relentless tight pressure through every single corner.

Mercedes' internal intra-team rivalry became the central focus throughout the first half of the grand prix. Both drivers pushed one another hard for the lead position, narrowly avoiding contact on multiple occasions.
Tensions peaked on lap 24, when Antonelli and Russell made minor light contact at the final chicane.
Antonelli briefly took the lead after running off track, but the Mercedes team immediately issued orders for him to surrender the position back to Russell.
This incident only escalated the competitive tension. Russell remained at the front, while Antonelli stayed right on his tail at extremely close range, waiting for an opening.
This fiery duel ended dramatically on lap 30. While leading the race, Russell's car suffered a power unit failure that forced him to stop his vehicle at Turn 9 and retire from the grand prix.
Russell's retirement cleared an unobstructed path for Antonelli to control the race all the way to the chequered flag. With no meaningful pressure for the remainder of the event, the Italian driver ran smoothly to secure this critical victory in the world title chase.
Alongside Antonelli's win, the Canadian Grand Prix also delivered a standout performance from Lewis Hamilton. The Scuderia Ferrari driver delivered an impressive run to finish in second place.
This result is Hamilton's strongest podium finish since the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, and signals a return to form for Ferrari following inconsistent performances across previous rounds.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen of Oracle Red Bull Racing completed the podium by crossing the line in third position.
Lando Norris endured a terrible race day. The McLaren Formula 1 Team driver failed to finish the grand prix, recording his first DNF since the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix.
Norris had shown very promising pace all Weekend, after taking second place in the sprint race and qualifying third on the grid. Unfortunately, a failure during the main grand prix left him leaving Montreal without scoring any championship points.
With four consecutive wins and an ever-widening points gap, Antonelli now holds an ideal position to chase his first ever Formula 1 World Championship title.
At his young age, the Mercedes driver is already displaying the mental toughness and race consistency required to dominate this new era of Formula 1.
