Chelsea FC has officially appointed Xabi Alonso as the New Head Coach of their first team. The Spanish tactician signed a four-year contract and will begin working at Stamford Bridge on 1 July 2026.

This announcement was delivered directly by Chelsea through the club's official website on Sunday, 17 May 2026. Alonso's appointment is stated as part of The Blues' major project to build a squad capable of competing again at the highest level of European Football.

"The Spanish coach will commence his duties on 1 July 2026, he has agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge," stated Chelsea's official release.

Chelsea management assessed that Xabi Alonso has complete qualifications to lead the club's new project. Aside from elite level experience, Alonso is also known for his modern tactical approach and strong leadership capability.

"His character and integrity are considered the primary key to lead Chelsea through this next phase of the club's journey," Chelsea wrote.

This appointment also serves as a signal of Chelsea's seriousness to rebuild a competitive team foundation, after several inconsistent seasons in both English League and European Competitions.

Responding to the trust given by the club, Alonso stated that he is proud to join one of the biggest football clubs in the world.

"Chelsea is one of the greatest clubs in World Football, and it is an enormous pride for me to become the manager of this outstanding club," said Alonso.

The 44-year-old coach also confirmed his ambition to bring trophies back to Chelsea. He stated that his personal vision is aligned with the club board's target to build a competitive team for the long term.

"There is great talent in this squad and huge potential at this football club, and it is a great honour for me to lead them. Right now, the focus is on hard work, building the right team culture, and winning trophies," he asserted.

Before accepting Chelsea's offer, Alonso previously managed Real Madrid. However his tenure with Los Blancos only lasted seven months, even though he had previously signed a long-term contract there.

Alonso's reputation rose drastically following his massive success with Bayer Leverkusen. He successfully delivered the club's very first Bundesliga title in its history back in 2024.

This achievement was made extra special as Leverkusen won the championship without suffering a single defeat across all domestic competitions throughout that entire season.

Xabi Alonso's appointment also marks the return of this former Spain National Team midfielder to the English League, after previously playing for Liverpool FC for five seasons during his playing career.

Alonso's presence at Stamford Bridge now becomes new hope for Chelsea to compete again for the English League and European competition titles in the coming seasons.
