"Jumping off this nearly 5 meter high cliff was absolutely thrilling! But... I got so caught up in the fun that before I knew it, I was almost swept away by the current!"

This was no empty boast. Even crossing the river was already a struggle for us, on top of the steep, slippery trekking path. But behind all these draining challenges, Leuwi Ceupet and Curug Leuwi Hejo located in Sentul, Bogor hold truly extraordinary natural beauty.

Heading to the 'Hidden Paradise' Closest to the Capital
This adventure brought us to one of the waterfalls nicknamed Bogor's hidden paradise. Situated in the Mount Cipancar area, Sentul, Curug Leuwi Hejo has become a Favourite Destination for Jakarta residents. The main Draw is its very accessible location, only around 40–50 kilometres away from the capital city.

After a 1.5 to 2 hour drive via the Jagorawi Toll Road exiting at the Sentul City Toll Gate, you will already have left the fatigue of the city far behind. The remaining distance after exiting the toll road is also short, only about 15–20 kilometres. However, due to the steep winding access roads, driving to the main parking area will take an additional 30 to 45 minutes.

Rainy Season Trekking Challenges: Landslide Sections and Slippery Rocks
The real adventure begins the moment you leave the parking area heading towards the main Curug Leuwi Hejo site. Visitors must trek on foot for a distance between 500 metres up to 1 kilometre. As it is currently Rainy Season, sections of the path have experienced landslides. But this did not dampen our spirit at all to conquer this terrain.

Important Tip: Warming up is an absolute mandatory step that cannot be skipped before trekking. Ankle exercises and proper stretching will prepare your muscles for the difficult trail, while also reducing the risk of cramping or Injury mid-journey.

The terrain leading to the site is indeed quite challenging. We had to traverse downhill paths, uphill climbs, extremely slippery rock formations, and several small stream crossings. The lack of proper direction signs at the location even forced us to stop and ask local residents for the correct route multiple times.

Even though we got disoriented for a while, all that tiredness vanished instantly the moment we saw the warm smiles of local residents and the dense green forest lining the entire path. Our steps felt lighter, and we were filled with excitement to reach our destination.

Traditional Stalls: Hiker Lifesavers and Local Economic Drivers
Interestingly, you will find many local residents selling goods along the entire trekking path. Cold drinks, warm instant noodles, Coffee, fried snacks, and all kinds of light food are available at multiple rest points.

While sipping on refreshing iced pulled tea that soothes the throat, these simple roadside stalls are far more than just a lifeline for exhausted hungry hikers. This local trading activity also directly supports and drives the economy for residents around the Mount Cipancar area.

One Trail, Countless Water Tourism Destinations
After making it through the challenging path, we finally arrived at Curug Leuwi Hejo. Its signature turquoise green water was immediately a feast for the eyes. There is a small scenic bridge at this site that lets you enjoy the view from above the river flow.

However, due to heavy rainfall that had fallen earlier, the water current at Leuwi Hejo was extremely strong. We decided to continue our journey further upstream to find a waterfall with calmer currents that would be safe for swimming.

The Leuwi Hejo area is very unique as it is not home to just one single waterfall. Along the same trekking trail, visitors can explore multiple waterfall spots and natural rock pools (locally called leuwi) all located close to one another, including:

  • Leuwi Ceupet: Famous for its iconic narrow rock gorge and natural pool reaching up to 4 metres deep.
  • Leuwi Lieuk: Offers calm green waters surrounded by tall cliff walls, resembling a miniature Grand Canyon.
  • Leuwi Baling: Has a quiet undisturbed natural atmosphere, perfect for anyone seeking peace.

The Heart-Pounding Moment Crossing the Fast River Current
With many branching trails and the need to cross fast flowing rivers, we became lost for a while. Luckily, we encountered a local resident who also worked as an official tour guide.

With their assistance, we managed to cross the river safely, even though the panicked expressions on our team members' faces were impossible to hide when faced directly with the rushing current. After discussing safe route options, we decided to head straight for our main target: Leuwi Ceupet.

The path leading to Leuwi Ceupet grew even more challenging, covered entirely in loose small rocks. Pebbles kept getting stuck inside our sandals, forcing us to stop repeatedly to empty them out.

Adrenaline Rush Cliff Jumping at Leuwi Ceupet
The name 'Ceupet' itself comes from the local language, describing the narrow fast-flowing water gorge that sets this spot apart from other waterfalls. Here, large boulders form a beautiful natural pool, and the atmosphere is far quieter than the main Leuwi Hejo site.

It would feel like a wasted visit not to test your adrenaline here. Gathering all my courage, I climbed the nearly 5 metre high rock cliff at the edge of the pool, before leaping freely down into the water.

Even though my swimming goggles got knocked off by the impact when I hit the water, this experience was completely worth it. That incredible rush and deep satisfaction when you jump gives an indescribable adrenaline high.

For reference, the natural pool at Leuwi Ceupet is 4 metres deep. So if you intend to swim or jump here, please ensure you have proper swimming ability for your own safety.

Once we had enough of playing in the cold waterfall water, our bodies started shivering. A bowl of warm broth soto from the riverside stall was the absolute perfect end to the day, restoring our energy after all the strenuous physical activity.

This journey to the Curug Leuwi Hejo area was indeed full of challenges. From slippery paths, strong river currents, to the exhausting rocky trekking route. But through all of this, nature always has its magical way of paying back every bit of tiredness, with breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences.

"Because sometimes, the best part of a journey is not just the destination you arrive at. It is all the unplanned, unexpected stories that unfold along the way."
