Jakarta - The group stage draw for the 2027 Asian Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, early Sunday (10/5) WIB, presents a major challenge for the Garuda Squad. The Indonesian National Team is confirmed to be in Group F and will once again face Asian giants Japan.

Besides the Blue Samurai, Indonesia's journey in Group F will also be tested by the strength of Middle Eastern power Qatar, and their eternal rival in Southeast Asia, Thailand.

Departing as a team from Pot 4, Indonesia is aware that the underdog status is attached to them. However, the presence of coach John Herdman in the coaching seat brings its own optimism for the Garuda Squad to repeat, or even surpass, the historic achievement of reaching the Round of 16 as in the 2023 edition.

Garuda's Opportunity: John Herdman's Modern Tactics are Key

On paper, Group F is a very challenging group. However, John Herdman's experience at the international level—known for building a winning mentality and tactical discipline—becomes valuable capital to compete for a ticket to the next round, either as runner-up or one of the best third-placed teams.

Here is the map of Indonesia's opportunities in these three crucial matches:

Against Japan (11 January 2027): This is a true tactical test for Herdman. Japan has a world-class squad with high ball possession dominance. A pragmatic approach, solid low block defense, and efficiency in quick counter-attacks will be key for Indonesia to try and steal points or minimize the goal deficit.

Facing Qatar (16 January 2027): As a leading Middle Eastern power, Qatar has physical advantages and transition speed. The structured play and pressing tactics often employed by Herdman are expected to dampen the opponent's aggression and exploit gaps in their backline.

ASEAN Derby vs Thailand (20 January 2027): This final match is predicted to be the key determinant of fate. Facing a regional rival who already know each other's playing characteristics, Herdman's modern touch is expected to boost player confidence to dictate play and secure the crucial full points.
Competition Map in Other Groups at the 2027 Asian Cup

Besides Group F, the AFC draw also mapped out fierce competition in the other groups:

Group A: Saudi Arabia (Host), Kuwait, Oman, Palestine.
Group B: Uzbekistan, Bahrain, North Korea, Jordan.
Group C: Iran, Syria, Kyrgyzstan, China.
Group D: Australia, Tajikistan, Iraq, Singapore.
Group E: South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Lebanon/Yemen.
