Rumors about potential additional playoffs for the 2026 World Cup have surfaced amid uncertainty involving one Asian participant, Iran. However, to date there has been no official confirmation from FIFA regarding this scenario.

This issue emerged after reports suggested the possible withdrawal of the Iran National Team from the tournament due to escalating geopolitical tensions.

Should this occur, FIFA is reportedly considering additional playoffs as a solution to fill the vacant slot.

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir responded cautiously to these rumors. He emphasized no official FIFA documents exist to substantiate them.

"I haven't received black and white confirmation from FIFA, so I won't speculate about uncertainties," stated Erick Thohir in Jakarta.

European media reports indicate the proposed playoff format would involve four teams—two from Europe and two from Asia.

This scheme is believed to be an emergency option should one participant slot become vacant.

Geopolitical tensions between Iran and the United States and Israel are cited as the primary factor behind the speculation. This is particularly sensitive since the 2026 World Cup will be hosted across three nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Nevertheless, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has quashed these speculations. He confirmed Iran will participate in the tournament.

Infantino stressed that players like Mehdi Taremi and his teammates deserve to compete after legitimately securing qualification during the qualifying stages.

Without official confirmation, these additional playoff rumors remain speculative.
