Optimism is flowing from the Indonesian Badminton Team camp ahead of the 2026 Thomas Cup. The Draw placed Merah Putih in Group D alongside France, Thailand, and Algeria. On paper, this composition offers opportunities but still presents real challenges. Indonesian Men's Singles player Jonatan Christie confidently assessed the competition map. Without underestimating the opponents' strength, especially France and Thailand, Jonatan sees the path to the knockout stage as still wide open for Indonesia. "Looking at it on paper, perhaps France has a bigger chance in doubles. Against Thailand in singles it might be 50-50, but we remain optimistic we can perform our best and hopefully become group champions," said Jonatan in Jakarta. France arrives with the status of 2026 European Men's Team Champions after defeating Denmark 3-2. Their squad depth is evident in the singles sector with the presence of Christo Popov, Toma Junior Popov, and Alex Lanier—three young names starting to perform consistently at the elite level. In doubles, the combination Thom Gicquel also adds a dimension that warrants caution. Thailand is no less solid. They rely on Kunlavut Vitidsarn as the spearhead in singles, supported by Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul who has now broken into the world's top 30. Meanwhile in doubles, the experience of Dechapol Puavaranukroh becomes a differentiating factor. Indonesia combines experience and Youthful energy as its main foundation. Names like Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Fajar Alfian, Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, Sabar Karyaman Gutama, and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani form the backbone, while young talents like Alwi Farhan are being given a stage. "With the current strength map becoming increasingly balanced, anyone can win. I hope the combination of senior and junior players can give their best and bring home the Thomas Cup," said Jonatan. History is on Indonesia's side. With 14 titles, Merah Putih remains the most successful nation in this event. The championship tradition started in 1958 and has continued across generations, with the latest title won in the 2020 edition (held in 2021) when Indonesia defeated China 3-0 in the final. India and China have each lifted the trophy in the last two editions, marking increasingly fierce global competition.
