In Sembalun, East Lombok, travel is no longer only about reaching the summit of Mount Rinjani. This highland area at the foot of Indonesia's second highest mountain now presents a new identity as an agritourism destination, weaving together natural scenery, farming activities, and local culture into one complete travel experience.
Sitting at an elevation of approximately 1,100 to 1,300 metres above sea level, Sembalun offers cool mountain air, vast stretches of farmland, and mountain vistas that rank among the most iconic panoramas in West Nusa Tenggara.
Today, travellers have far more reasons to extend their stay in this village.

The Flower Garden That Transformed Sembalun's Identity
One of the area's newest draws is Sembalun Flower Garden, which grew from the simple personal dream of a local resident named Junaidi.
Nestled among sprawling horticultural fields, this half-hectare flower garden has become a favourite spot for visitors to enjoy bright rows of chrysanthemums framed against the imposing backdrop of Mount Rinjani.
The story behind this garden is unassuming yet deeply inspiring.
"We planted the flowers little by little. Sometimes we would buy seedlings from other villagers, plant them, then repeat the cycle over. It turned out beautifully, and this place started drawing so many visitors," Junaidi shared, recalling the five-year long process that built the Sembalun Flower Garden.
The existence of this flower garden proves that Sembalun's appeal does not rely solely on mountain trekking. Thousands of visitors now come here to soak in the quiet rural atmosphere, capture moments among the flower fields, and watch the evening sun cast golden light across Rinjani's slopes.
For photography enthusiasts and social media content creators alike, this location is recognised as one of the very best spots in East Lombok.
Beyond Photo Opportunities: Live A Day As A Local Farmer
But the true future of tourism in Sembalun goes far beyond scenic views.
A concept currently taking root here is experience-based agritourism: a global travel trend that invites visitors to participate directly in the daily life of local communities.
Instead of only walking through farm fields, guests are guided to understand how the vegetables they consume grow, right from the very first seed stage.
Mornings begin walking along rice field bunds still glistening with morning dew. Working side by side with local farmers, visitors learn to select healthy seedlings, plant vegetables, care for growing crops, and grasp the patience required at every step of agricultural work.
The experience continues with harvesting fresh produce straight from the earth. These newly picked vegetables are then cooked together into a traditional Sembalun lunch.
This simple activity delivers a far more meaningful experience than chasing perfect photographs.
Travellers leave not just with memories, but with new knowledge and genuine appreciation for the hard work of farmers, who form the critical foundation of global food systems.
This tourism model also delivers direct economic benefits for local communities, creating additional income streams separate from regular crop harvests.
Fertile Land, Yet Water Remains A Pressing Challenge
Beneath the fertility of Sembalun's farmlands lies a major ongoing challenge: reliable clean water access.
Ahsanul Khalik, Spokesperson for the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government, stated that proper irrigation infrastructure is an urgent requirement to allow the agricultural sector to reach its full potential.
Currently, local communities rely on bore wells and rain-fed farming. While natural water sources do exist in the surrounding mountains, distribution requires dedicated infrastructure support as this zone falls within the protected Mount Rinjani National Park area.
Improving this infrastructure is expected to strengthen Sembalun's position both as a leading tourism destination and a premium agricultural production hub.
The Umbaran Cattle Tradition Found Nowhere Else
Beyond farming, Sembalun preserves a unique cultural tradition rarely encountered at other tourist destinations.
Most families in this village raise cattle using the umbaran system: livestock are released to graze freely across the rolling hills, including Kanji Hill and Dandaun Hill.
Most remarkably, every herder has their own distinct, personal call for their cattle.
Muhamad Riadi, Head of the West Nusa Tenggara Livestock and Animal Health Service, expressed great admiration for this living tradition.
Even when hundreds or thousands of cattle are grazing together on the same pasture, only that herder's own animals will respond and approach when they hear their specific call.
This generational tradition reflects the deep, harmonious bond between people, nature, and livestock that remains intact here to this day.
For visitors, watching the umbaran cattle is not just an unusual attraction—it is an opportunity to understand the authentic daily life of Sembalun's people.
A Destination Worth Staying For
For years, Sembalun was known only as the gateway to Mount Rinjani. Yet this region holds far greater potential than most travellers realise.
Stretching flower fields, horticultural plantations, hands-on farming experiences, fresh farm-to-table cuisine, and the traditional umbaran cattle culture combine to make Sembalun a destination that offers a complete, immersive travel experience.
This is the new direction for quality, meaningful tourism: travel that does not only produce beautiful photographs, but leaves visitors with lasting memories, new understanding, and genuine connection with local community life.
For anyone seeking travel with real purpose, Sembalun is far more than just a stopover before climbing Rinjani. This village deserves to be a primary destination, to experience the unspoiled, warm, and story-rich heart of Lombok's highlands.
