The spotlight shifts to the FIFA World Cup 2026, narrowing to the high-pressure European Zone playoffs. Here, 16 European teams will fiercely compete for the four remaining tickets. The smallest mistake could have a massive impact on keeping hopes alive.

Among the 16 contenders, public attention in Football is focused on the Italian National Team. The four-time world champions once again stand at a historical crossroads, carrying the burden of a past not yet fully erased.

Gli Azzurri are haunted by a poor record in World Cup Playoff matches within the European Zone. Italy carries a dark and hard-to-forget record from the last two editions.

In 2018, Italy was eliminated by Sweden in the playoffs. Four years later, they failed again to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, losing to North Macedonia.

Now, a chance for redemption is within sight, but the path remains difficult.

Italy is placed in Path A and will begin their journey by facing the Northern Ireland National Team in the semi-final.

If they overcome this initial hurdle, they will meet the winner of the Wales vs Bosnia Herzegovina clash in the ticket-deciding Do-or-Die match.

A major difference this edition is the single-leg format. There is no second chance, no room to fix mistakes. The team coached by Gennaro Gattuso must perform perfectly from the first minute.

Other Paths Just as Heated

In Group B, Ukraine will face Sweden, while Poland takes on Albania.

Group C features a duel between Slovakia and Kosovo, and Turkey against Romania.

Meanwhile, Group D presents a clash between the Czech Republic and Ireland, plus Denmark being tested by North Macedonia.

Only the winners from each path will advance to the grandest stage in World Football

For Italy, this match is more than just a game. It is their opportunity to erase the shadow of failure.
