Amid doubts that once shadowed his steps, Alvaro Arbeloa now stands as a figure who can no longer be ignored. The Real Madrid coach silenced critics in the most convincing way, eliminating two giants of world coaching, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, from the Champions League stage.
Arbeloa's journey to the Quarter-Finals is not just a result, but a statement.
After first overcoming Mourinho's Benfica, Madrid completed a major task by eliminating Guardiola-coached Manchester City with a resounding 5-1 aggregate in the Round of 16.

Yet behind that victory, Arbeloa addressed the doubts that had haunted him.
"They criticized me for having weak players. Two months ago I didn't believe I would be this far [in the Champions League]," Arbeloa stated in the club's official release.
Los Blancos secured their Quarter-Final Champions League ticket convincingly. They crushed Manchester City with a 5-1 aggregate in the Round of 16 after defeating The Citizens at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
Facing Guardiola, a coach with elite reputation and experience, Arbeloa admitted this win wasn't just a tactical duel on paper.
"I didn't see that victory. I couldn't say I would win on paper against a coach like Guardiola, who has managed 1000 games, is among the elite coaches, and won many trophies," said the Spanish coach.
He emphasized the team's playing approach and collective work as the main keys. Madrid won, he stated, because they could read gaps and execute with precision.
"If we won the tie, it was thanks to the players' work. As a coach, I always analyze the opponent and see how we can hurt them," said Arbeloa.
The victory over City also served as confirmation: Arbeloa isn't just a "lucky" young coach.
He has now defeated two figures who defined modern football's era: Mourinho with his pragmatism, and Guardiola with his positional play philosophy.
In the quarter-finals, Madrid awaits the winner of Bayern Munich vs Atalanta, which will determine how far Arbeloa's revival story continues.
