Former Indonesian National Team Coach Shin Tae-yong welcomes the new era of the Garuda squad under John Herdman's leadership. The South Korean Coach believes that with full supporter backing and a structured system, Indonesia can move forward again, even targeting the World Cup stage.
Herdman is not an ordinary name. He led Canada to the 2022 World Cup, an achievement that boosted his reputation internationally. Now, a new challenge awaits with the Indonesian National Team.
"Now there's a new National Team Coach, right? The atmosphere is also very good, it has turned for the better. And I believe if there is good support from the fans of Indonesian Football, it will definitely bring good results," Shin stated during a press conference with shampoo brand Clear in South Jakarta on Friday.

Shin is no stranger to the transformation journey of Indonesian football. During his five years at the helm of Garuda (2020–2025), he led 57 matches with a record of 26 wins, 14 draws, and 17 losses.
Under his guidance, Indonesia made history by reaching the Round of 16 in the 2023 Asian Cup and advancing to the third round of 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
This achievement also secured an automatic berth for the 2027 Asian Cup. He also led the U-23 national team to make history at the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup.
"I've spoken several times, Indonesian football is developing and will continue to develop in the future," said the 55-year-old coach.
After Shin's era ended, the baton was briefly held by Patrick Kluivert. The Dutch coach led four matches in the third round of qualifiers.
The result, Kluivert secured two wins that advanced Indonesia to the fourth round. However, Garuda's journey halted after defeats to Saudi Arabia and Iraq, failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Now, optimism is being rebuilt with Herdman. Shin believes a strong foundation and a well-structured system will be key to realizing bigger dreams.
"With player focus and perhaps building a good systematic structure, they will definitely be able to qualify for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups," he concluded.
