The heated match between ANTARA Persija Jakarta and PSM Makassar at the Jakarta International Stadium on Friday night left more than just a 2-1 victory for the hosts. The spotlight turned to the malfunctioning video assistant referee (VAR) technology during this BRI Super League fixture.

The duel between these two giants of Indonesian League unfolded with high tension. However, the absence of VAR, which should be standard in modern competitions, prompted both coaches to voice their concerns.

PSM Makassar coach, Thomas Trucha, expressed disappointment because his team only received information about the inactive VAR during the warm-up session.

“We were informed during the warm-up that the VAR was inactive and being repaired. We waited until the match was underway, even until the first-half break, but there was no certainty,” stated Thomas.

According to him, the inactive VAR affected the overall dynamics of the match. Not only for the players on the field, but also for the match officials in making crucial decisions.

He believes consistent use of VAR is fundamental to maintaining the integrity of the competition.

“If VAR is already being used in the league, then all matches every week should use VAR. This is important for Fair Play,” he said.

On the host side, Persija Jakarta coach Mauricio Souza conveyed a similar view. Despite his team securing the win, the Brazilian coach still lamented the absence of VAR technology in such an important match.

“I think it's very unfortunate there was no VAR. In doubtful situations, VAR could help clarify,” he said.

Souza acknowledged that his team had received prior notification that the match would be played without VAR due to technical issues.

Nevertheless, in the context of modern Football which demands high precision, the absence of this technology remains a separate note.

In that match, Persija defeated visitors PSM Makassar with a final score of 2-1. Persija took the lead in the 30th minute through Alaaeddine Ajaraie's header. PSM equalized in the 35th minute thanks to a goal from Sheriddin Boboev. However, Maxwell put Persija back ahead in the 65th minute, a lead they held until the final whistle.

The additional three points moved Persija into second place in the Standings of the provisional Super League table with 47 points, while PSM remained stuck in 13th place with 23 points.
