The semifinals of the Qatar TotalEnergies Open 2026 present a stage full of surprises. At the WTA 1000 Doha event, Jelena Ostapenko, Victoria Mboko, Karolina Muchova, and Maria Sakkari stand on the brink of the final with different stories, yet the same goal.

On Doha's hard courts, Ostapenko is the most experienced figure. The Latvian player holds the record for most wins in tournament history with a 24-9 tally.

This track record makes her not merely a semifinalist, but a symbol of consistency in Qatar.

"It all started here in 2016, my biggest final back then," said Ostapenko, quoted from WTA.

However, this semifinal isn't solely about nostalgia. Across the net stands Victoria Mboko, the 19-year-old teenager who has become the week's biggest surprise face.

Earlier, she eliminated second seed Elena Rybakina in a three-set battle 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

Mboko trailed 2-4 in the third set against Rybakina, Champion of the Australian Open 2026 who was chasing her 10th consecutive victory.

But the final four games belonged to her, including the fourth match point she finally converted into victory.

With 126 winners – the most in Doha – Mboko relies not only on steely mentality but also pure aggression.

She has now defeated two Top 10 players, Mirra Andreeva and Rybakina, in consecutive matches.

Notably, Mboko is the first teenager to reach the Doha semifinals since Ostapenko achieved it.

"She knows this court well, she knows the environment. I expect her to play very good tennis. We'll see what happens," said Mboko about her upcoming opponent Ostapenko.

This duel resembles a meeting of two generations: one bringing Grand Slam experience, the other carrying carefree momentum.

On the other side of the Draw, Maria Sakkari writes a new chapter in her resurgence. She toppled top seed Iga Swiatek in a dramatic three-set match, ending a streak of four consecutive losses against the six-time Grand Slam Champion.

"I felt the only way to do it was by defeating those elite players. It's similar to what I did when I was at that same level years ago," said Sakkari.

After dropping to rank 32 in 2024 and 52 in 2025, Sakkari now eyes the second WTA 1000 title of her career.

Victories over Swiatek and Jasmine Paolini prove she has rediscovered her competitive rhythm.

Karolina Muchova becomes Sakkari's final hurdle to the final. The Czech player advanced steadily with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Anna Kalinskaya and has lost only 19 games across four matches this week.

Muchova opened 2026 with a 10-2 record, including semifinals in Brisbane and the fourth round of the Australian Open. She has twice been a WTA 1000 finalist, in Cincinnati 2023 and Beijing 2024.

"We've played each other several times. It will definitely be tough, but I'm prepared for this challenge," said Muchova. Who will advance to the final?
