The 2026 Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) marked a shift in the Asian badminton landscape with Japan and South Korea emerging as champions. Japan won the men's team title, while South Korea claimed the women's team title. Meanwhile, Indonesia had to settle for two bronze medals to close the tournament.
In the men's team event, Japan displayed dominance against host China in Sunday's final. The Land of the Rising Sun team secured the championship title with a decisive 3-0 victory, ending a long wait since this event was first held in 2016.
The title was decided in the third match. Men's singles player Koki Watanabe made the difference after defeating Zhu Xuan Chen in a three-game battle with a score of 22-24, 21-17, 21-18.

Tension peaked during the deciding game. However, Watanabe ensured Japan locked in the victory without needing to proceed to the fourth and fifth matches.
Earlier, Japan had already taken control. Men's singles player Yushi Tanaka opened the lead after defeating Hu Zhe An 21-10, 21-18.
That momentum was continued by the Men's Doubles pair Kakeru Kumagai/Hiroki Nishi, who overcame the challenge from He Ji Ting/Ren Xiang Yu with a score of 21-17, 14-21, 21-15.
Japan's success in becoming the 2026 Asian men's team champions confirms the shift in power dynamics in the region.
In the previous five editions, the championship title had always alternated between Indonesia, Malaysia, and China. Now, Japan has emerged as a new force.
History was also made in the women's team event. South Korea secured the Asian Team Championship title for the first time after defeating China with an identical 3-0 score in the final.
World number one Women's Singles player An Se-young gave South Korea the lead with a dominant win over Han Qian Xi 21-7, 21-14.
The pressure continued when the doubles pair Baek Ha-na/Kim Hye-jeong defeated Jia Yi Fan/Zhang Shu Xian 24-22, 21-8.
The third match became the perfect closer for South Korea. Kim Ga-eun secured the victory after defeating Xu Wen Jing in a three-game match, 19-21, 21-10, 21-17.
This defeat meant China failed to win any title despite competing in front of their home crowd in Qingdao.
Nevertheless, China is still predicted to remain one of the main contenders at the world's most prestigious team events, the 2026 Thomas and Uber Cups.
Meanwhile, Indonesia failed to reach the finals. Both the men's and women's Merah Putih teams were halted in the semifinals, bringing home two bronze medals from the 2026 BATC.
This result keeps Indonesia among Asia's elite teams, but also signals that team competition in the region is now increasingly tight with the emergence of Japan and South Korea as the new champions.
