English Premier League club Manchester United has sacked manager Ruben Amorim. The managerial position will be temporarily filled by Darren Fletcher when MU faces Burnley in the 21st matchweek of the 2025/2026 Premier League, early Thursday morning, 8 January 2026 WIB.
Quoted from the club's official website on Monday 5 January, Manchester United thanked Amorim for his contributions while managing The Red Devils and wished him the best for the future.
Ruben Amorim was brought to Manchester United on 11 November 2024 to replace Erik ten Hag. In the remainder of the 2024/2025 season, he led MU to the final of the Europa League before losing to Tottenham, and concluded the Premier League in 15th place with 42 points.

In the ongoing 2025/2026 season, after 20 weeks, Manchester United ranks sixth in the Standings with 31 points from 20 matches, just three points behind Liverpool in the top four. Overall, Amorim recorded an average of 1.43 points per match from 63 games.
As temporary replacement, MU appointed Darren Fletcher, a former midfielder who currently manages the club's U-18 team.
According to United States-based Sports media The Athletic, Fletcher's appointment relates to his experience as Erik Ten Hag's assistant during the 2022–2024 period.
Since being appointed U18 coach in July 2025, Fletcher has taken his team to second place in the Northern Region of the English U18 League with eight wins, two Draws, and four losses, plus one victory in the FA Youth Cup.
The Athletic also mentioned Fletcher is popular among Manchester United's young players.
As a player, Fletcher represented MU from 2002–2015 with 342 appearances, scoring 24 goals and providing 31 assists. He won five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one UEFA Champions League, and one FIFA Club World Cup.
Tactically, Fletcher differs from Amorim who frequently used three defenders. With the U-18 team, he predominantly employs a four-defender formation, especially 4-2-3-1, considered better suited to Premier League characteristics.
