The name John Herdman is increasingly prominent as a candidate for Indonesia's National Team Coach. The English coach is reportedly given the green light by PSSI (Football Association of Indonesia) and only awaits an official introduction as the new helmsman of the Garuda squad.
One aspect capturing public attention is Herdman's prospective contract value. He's rumored to receive a monthly salary of approximately Rp670 million, deemed realistic amid the federation's ongoing restructuring.
Following the failure of the Patrick Kluivert era, PSSI is reportedly more cautious in selecting a head coach. Comprehensive evaluations occurred after major targets weren't met, while the federation also bears financial obligations including compensation after dismissing Shin Tae-yong and releasing Kluivert's staff.

Under these circumstances, choosing an experienced coach with an international track record is considered the most logical step. Herdman fits this category, especially with his prestigious achievement of leading Canada's national team to qualify for the 2022 World Cup—a feat elevating his global reputation.
Toronto-based media Waking The Red revealed details about Herdman's move to Indonesia. Their report states the former Toronto FC coach would receive approximately Rp670 million monthly if officially appointed to lead Indonesia's National Team.
For comparison, Shin Tae-yong reportedly earned Rp1.9 billion monthly during his second contract with Indonesia—a significant increase from his initial contract of around Rp1 billion per month.
"The monthly salary of US$40,000 (Rp670,892,000) is reported as the deciding factor."
"This occurred as the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) decided to appoint Canada's former coach as head coach of the Indonesian men's national team," wrote Waking The Red.
The report added that Herdman had multiple suitors. Other federations reportedly expressed interest in securing his services, given his reputation and experience.
However, Indonesia emerged as the most aggressive and visionary bidder. Beyond clear financial terms, PSSI offered a two-year contract with a two-year extension option—providing both stability and medium-term planning.
Interest from Honduras and Jamaica ultimately didn't materialize into agreements. Indonesia's offer structure was deemed more comprehensive and aligned with Herdman's career aspirations.
"Although Honduras showed interest and Jamaica seemed a realistic destination."
"Indonesia's proposal structure in both duration and financial value proved decisive for Herdman," it explained.
Notably, Waking The Red also viewed Herdman's appointment as a strategic move for PSSI. This step is seen as the most rational approach to ease mounting public pressure, particularly toward PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir.
Herdman's project isn't positioned as a quick fix but as a long-term foundation. The primary goal is maintaining consistent performance for Indonesia to sustainably compete at Asian and international levels.
"At minimum, he's expected to remain until PSSI President Erick Thohir's term ends in 2027."
"Providing continuity levels often lacking in Indonesian football," it concluded.
