John Herdman is edging closer to starting a new chapter in his coaching career with the Indonesian National Team. The English coach is reportedly the strongest candidate and is just waiting to be officially introduced by PSSI as the new skipper of the Garuda squad.

Herdman's name emerged after PSSI conducted a major evaluation following the failure of the Indonesian National Team in 2026 World Cup Qualification. In the previous period, Patrick Kluivert and his staff failed to achieve the big ambition of bringing Garuda to the world stage, a result that left deep disappointment among supporters.

With a proven track record at the international level, Herdman is expected to be a reformer. He made history with the Canadian national team by leading them to World Cup Qualification and also has experience managing Major League Soccer club Toronto FC. These credentials create high expectations for him in Indonesia.

Herdman's main mission is not only to fix short-term performance but also to lay the foundation for success towards the 2027 Asian Cup. That tournament is a realistic target and the initial benchmark for the success of his new coaching project.

Canadian media outlet Wakin The Red reported that Herdman has reached an agreement with PSSI. The report stated that the federation set clear targets from the outset, namely to take Indonesia to the quarter-finals of the 2027 Asian Cup.

"One of the targets is to get Indonesia past the quarter-finals of the 2027 Asian Cup."

Previously, under the leadership of Shin Tae-yong, the Indonesian national team managed to reach the Round of 16 of the Asian Cup. That achievement was an important foundation, but PSSI believes the national team has the potential to go further with a more mature approach and structure.

"2026 will be focused on building the team and finding the best composition."

"Herdman, who will spend the new year preparing for the 2027 Asian Cup."

"PSSI has set a clear target to reach the quarter-finals. Indonesia was eliminated in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup after losing to Australia."

"But there has been consistent progress since then," wrote the Wakin The Red report.

Herdman's approach is known to be systematic and long-term oriented. Not only will he handle the senior team, but he will also be directly involved in managing the Indonesian U23 national team. This step is seen as crucial to strengthening the regeneration pathway and ensuring player quality continuity.

Through involvement at the U-23 level, Herdman is expected to identify potential young talents ready to step up to the senior team. This strategy is key to ensuring the national team's performance is not only competitive in the short term but also stable in the long run.

"In addition to leading the senior national team, Herdman will also be responsible for the Indonesian U23 team."

Despite his stellar reputation, Herdman's challenges in Indonesia are not light. Public pressure and supporter expectations are unavoidable factors. The failure of the previous Patrick era has put PSSI and the national team under intense scrutiny, with criticism flowing from various directions.

Herdman is required to make the most of his two-year contract, which includes an extension option. If he can deliver tangible progress and positive results, public support is believed to strengthen again. It's even possible his name could earn a special place in the hearts of supporters, matching the influence once held by Shin Tae-yong.

"After his tenure at Toronto FC in MLS, Herdman now faces a very different challenge in Indonesia."

"A challenge accompanied by high expectations, a clear roadmap, and a salary that makes the offer hard to refuse," it concluded.
