For travel enthusiasts, there's good news from the global mobility sector. The latest September 2025 edition of the Henley Passport Index reports that the Indonesian passport now allows its holders to travel to 73 countries visa-free or with visa on arrival (VOA) facilities.
This improvement places Indonesia at 68th position globally, tied with eSwatini and slightly ahead of the Dominican Republic, which has access to 72 countries.
Within Southeast Asia, Indonesia's position remains in the middle. Singapore retains the strongest passport not only in the region but also globally, with visa-free access to 192 countries.
Malaysia follows at 12th position with 180 countries. Meanwhile, Thailand occupies 64th place (80 countries) and the Philippines is at 74th place (64 countries).
The Henley Passport Index is recognized as the world's most authoritative passport ranking.
This list is calculated based on the number of destinations accessible without a full visa, via visa on arrival, e-visa, or electronic travel authorization (eTA).
“With over 20 years of data, the index covers 199 passports and 227 destinations updated monthly, serving as the standard reference for assessing global passport strength,” states the Henley Passport Index 2025.
The index data is sourced from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the world's largest and most accurate travel database, further enhanced by research from Henley & Partners.
Henley emphasizes that a passport's strength reflects its citizens' access to global opportunities, spanning business, investment, education, and tourism.
For Indonesian passport holders, broader opportunities to explore the world are now open.
Several countries accessible visa-free or with VOA are quite diverse, ranging from exotic destinations to popular hotspots.
In Southeast Asia, access is available to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste.
In other parts of Asia, Indonesian travelers can enter Hong Kong, Macau, Maldives, Sri Lanka (eTA), and even Japan through a special visa waiver program for e-passport holders.
For Europe, options include Serbia, Turkey (e-visa), Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, and Russia.
Africa is equally appealing, with access to Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania, Seychelles, and Mauritius through various visa on arrival or e-visa schemes.
Meanwhile, in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Indonesian passport opens doors to Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, as well as Barbados and Nicaragua.
In Oceania, destinations like Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tuvalu, and Kiribati are on the list of places that can be visited without the hassle of arranging visas well in advance.
This rise in the Indonesian passport's ranking is a positive signal for citizen mobility and the nation's diplomatic standing in the eyes of the world.
Now, traveling abroad isn't just a dream; it's increasingly becoming a reality, at least for those already packing their bags with the Garuda-adorned passport in hand.
