Jakarta, the city that never sleeps, has now gained global recognition. According to the latest 2026 World’s Best Cities Report by Resonance Consultancy, Indonesia's capital has surged to 53rd place globally, a dramatic rise from its 89th position in 2023.

This achievement places Jakarta above major cities like Washington DC (57) and Taipei (63), while also making it one of Southeast Asia's fastest-rising cities in the rankings.

What makes Jakarta increasingly acknowledged as a global city? Here are five reasons:

1. Dynamic and Distinctive Urban Growth

Jakarta is more than just a capital city. It is a unique mosaic of urban life, blending skyscrapers with street food stalls, digital startups with traditional markets.

The fusion of modernity and local culture creates an atmosphere unlike any other city.

In the Resonance report, Jakarta captured attention for its growing livability and social energy despite intense urbanization pressures.

2. Accelerating Infrastructure and Mobility Transformation

In recent years, Jakarta has aggressively revamped its transportation landscape, including MRT and LRT systems, TransJakarta, and digital integration in public transit.

Additionally, the development of public spaces like city parks, bike lanes, and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks adds significant value to urban quality-of-life assessments.

These efforts are reshaping Jakarta's reputation from congestion-plagued to increasingly human-centric.

3. Hub for Creative Economy and Digital Technology

Jakarta now serves as Southeast Asia's digital economy epicenter. Many global startups choose Jakarta as their operational base, supported by a young, tech-savvy, and creative population.

According to Resonance Consultancy, strong performance in the "Prosperity" and "Programming (Social & Creative Life)" indicators drove Jakarta's ascent in the rankings.

With robust digital infrastructure and a rapidly expanding creative community, Jakarta is solidifying its potential as a global innovation hub.

4. Rich Culture, Diverse Cuisine, and Vibrant Lifestyle

Every corner of Jakarta tells a story. From Kota Tua to SCBD, cultural festivals to international concerts—all thrive in this ceaselessly dynamic city.

Jakarta offers cross-cultural culinary experiences, blending local and global flavors that captivate international visitors.

This explains why Resonance highlights Jakarta's "Place" and "People" appeal: a bustling, friendly, and colorful metropolis.

5. Strengthening Global Competitiveness

Jakarta's rise to 53rd globally signals its growing parity with major world metropolises.

In Southeast Asia, Jakarta now trails just behind Kuala Lumpur (50), Bangkok (22), and Singapore (6), yet boasts the region's fastest development pace.

Remarkably, this marks only Jakarta's second appearance in the Top 100 World's Best Cities—and it surged over 30 positions instantly.

With consistently rising investment, tourism, and technological innovation, Jakarta is undeniably becoming a "global city in the making."
