Sad news comes from the international volleyball world. The Iran Volleyball Federation (IRIVF) confirmed that one of their best players, Saber Kazemi, suffered brain death after collapsing in Qatar in mid-October 2025.
In an official statement on its social media account, IRIVF shared updates regarding Kazemi's condition following the collapse.
"The medical team confirmed brain death. However, life support equipment remains connected and Saber is still alive."
They also asked the public to respect the family's privacy and pray for the player's condition.
Struggle in the Treatment Room
Kazemi had received intensive treatment in Doha, Qatar, under the supervision of a renowned neurology professor. He suddenly lost consciousness after undergoing a post-preseason training recovery session in a swimming pool.
The medical team immediately administered first aid before transporting him to a Doha hospital, where Kazemi was declared comatose.
Subsequently, the 26-year-old player was transferred to Iran for advanced treatment. IRIVF disclosed that doctors in his home country exhausted all possible medical interventions but failed to restore his brain function.
A Shining Career on the Court
Saber Kazemi was a prominent name in Asian volleyball. Standing approximately two meters tall with an explosive playing style, he had been a key member of Iran's national team since 2018.
Throughout his career, Kazemi helped Iran secure victory at the 2021 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship and the Asian Games in 2018 and 2022.
Beyond national team success, his club achievements were equally impressive. Kazemi played for Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi in Indonesia during the 2024–2025 season and most recently signed with Qatar's Al Rayyan for the 2025–2026 season.
His trophy collection includes the Iranian Super League 2020/2021 title, the 2021 Asian Club Championship with Foolad Sirjan, the Kuwait League 2023/2024 with Kuwait FC, and Indonesia's Proliga 2025 with Bhayangkara Presisi.
Kazemi was also recognized individually, earning MVP honors at both the 2021 Asian Volleyball Championship and the 2021 Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship.
More Than Just an Athlete
Saber Kazemi's story highlights the hidden perils of sports beyond the camera flashes and roaring crowds. His current state—dependent on life support—has deeply impacted the sporting world, particularly Asia's volleyball community.
While his ultimate fate remains uncertain, Kazemi's on-court battles and spirited representation of numerous Asian clubs have left an indelible legacy.
The Iranian Federation concluded its statement with hope, urging collective prayers for Kazemi.
“We ask everyone to pray for Kazemi and respect his family's privacy.”
Now, the volleyball world awaits a miracle for a player who ignited competitive fire in every match he played.
