Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir affirmed that Indonesia will adopt a calculative and cautious stance should it face Israeli athletes in international competitions.

According to him, this stance represents a balance between the principles of foreign policy and the responsibility to uphold the sportsmanship of world sports.

"Our position will certainly be calculative if there is a meeting (between Indonesian and Israeli athletes) in a match," stated Erick Thohir during a press conference in Jakarta, Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

This statement came in response to questions regarding the potential meeting of Indonesian and Israeli athletes in various upcoming world sports events.

Erick emphasized Indonesia would not act rashly but would remain steadfast to state principles and the constitution.

"Many countries in the world also avoid meetings with Israel in championships," said Erick.

Firm Stance Through Cancellation of Israeli Athlete Visas

The Minister cited the cancellation of visas for the Israeli gymnastics contingent intending to participate in the 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta as a form of the Indonesian Government's firmness.

According to him, this policy was not without reason. It was part of the mandate of the 1945 Constitution and an effort to help maintain world security and order, including the smooth running of the world championship event attended by thousands of athletes from dozens of countries.

IOC Reaction and Sports Diplomacy

This policy prompted a reaction from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which issued a recommendation to international sports federations to be cautious about holding championships in Indonesia. Erick clarified that this decision was not an absolute ban.

"The IOC's decision is also a recommendation, not a prohibition," he explained.

Therefore, he supports the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) to continue communication with the IOC to find the best solution.

"However, as the Indonesian Government, our standing is clear, as mentioned earlier, in accordance with the 1945 Constitution, the smooth running of events, and also for the sake of world security and order," he concluded.
