Jakarta – Garuda Indonesia will transition its checked baggage calculation system from the Weight Concept (based on total combined weight) to the Piece Concept (based on number of luggage items) effective 1 September 2026. This change forms part of the national flag carrier's service transformation, while also providing clearer certainty regarding the number of suitcases allowed and applicable weight limits for passengers.
This policy applies to all tickets purchased or issued on or after 1 September 2026, for travel dates on or after this effective date. Meanwhile, passengers who purchased or had their tickets issued prior to 1 September 2026 will remain subject to the baggage conditions stated on their original ticket, even if their travel takes place after the new policy comes into force.
Neil Raymond Mills, Garuda Indonesia's Transformation Director, stated that the rollout of the Piece Concept is part of the company's efforts to modernise its services, as well as deliver a more consistent and intuitive travel experience.

"The implementation of the Piece Concept is part of Garuda Indonesia's transformation to modernise our services and provide improved certainty for passengers. With clear rules on the number of allowed items and maximum weight per piece, customers can prepare their belongings much more easily, from the initial travel planning stage right up until departure," stated Neil in an official press release received in Jakarta on Monday, 13 July 2026.
According to Neil, this new system provides clear parameters for the number of allowed suitcases and the maximum permitted weight for each individual checked baggage item. Aside from making baggage rules easier to understand, this scheme also delivers improved benefits for passengers, with higher overall baggage allowances compared to the previous regulations.
Domestic Flight Baggage Allowance
For domestic flights, Economy Class passengers will be allocated 1 checked baggage piece with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms.
Meanwhile, Business Class and First Class passengers will receive an allowance of 2 pieces, each with a maximum weight of 32 kilograms, bringing the total allowed checked baggage to 64 kilograms.
International Flight Baggage Allowance
For international routes, Economy Class passengers will be entitled to 2 checked baggage pieces, each with a maximum 23 kilogram weight limit, for a combined total allowance of 46 kilograms.
Business Class and First Class passengers on international flights will retain the 2 piece allowance, with a 32 kilogram maximum weight per item, resulting in a total checked baggage allowance of 64 kilograms.
Increased Baggage Allocations
Compared to the Weight Concept system that has been in use to date, the introduction of the Piece Concept brings increased baggage allowances across all travel classes.
On domestic routes, Economy Class baggage allowance will increase from 20 kilograms to 23 kilograms. Business Class allowance will rise from 30 kilograms to 64 kilograms, while First Class allowance will also increase from 40 kilograms to 64 kilograms.
For international routes, Economy Class baggage allocation will increase from 30 kilograms to 46 kilograms. Business Class allowance will rise from 40 kilograms to 64 kilograms, with First Class allowance also increasing from 50 kilograms to 64 kilograms.
With this change, passengers holding certain ticket categories will receive an increase of up to 34 kilograms in total baggage allowance compared to the previous regulations, subject to compliance with the limits on number of pieces and maximum weight per individual suitcase.
Alignment With Global Aviation Industry Standards
Garuda Indonesia confirmed that the Piece Concept is already widely implemented across the international aviation industry. Aside from providing clear certainty on the number of suitcases passengers may bring, this system allows travellers to plan their belongings well in advance of departure.
From an operational perspective, this system also enables faster, more efficient check-in and baggage handling processes. This scheme also simplifies travel for passengers transferring onto connecting flights operated by other airlines that use the same baggage standard.
"The Piece Concept scheme is already widely used across the global aviation industry. Its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardisation, support smooth baggage handling operations, and deliver improved certainty for our customers, including those travelling onward on international route networks," Neil was quoted as stating by Antara news agency.
In line with the rollout of this new policy, Garuda Indonesia advises all passengers to verify the permitted number of baggage pieces and maximum weight limit per suitcase applicable to their travel route, cabin class and ticket category.
Full details on baggage allowances may be accessed via Garuda Indonesia's official website, Contact Centre, or any official communication channels prior to travel.
