Argentina once again has reason to earn a place on the dream destination list for football lovers worldwide. The world champion nation has just inaugurated a giant statue of Lionel Messi in the Patagonia region, a grand monument projected to become a new tourism icon and a magnet for visitors from every corner of the globe.
Standing at 26 metres tall with an approximate weight of 70 tonnes, this statue serves not only as a tribute to the Argentina national team captain, but also as a symbol of national pride for Messi's extraordinary journey with the Albiceleste.
The monument is located in Cutral Co, Patagonia, Argentina, and was officially unveiled to the public on 16 June 2026.

Argentina's New Tourism Icon For Lionel Messi Fans
Created by artist Aldo Beroisa, this statue captures one of the most emotional moments of Lionel Messi's career: the moment he dropped to his knees after leading Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The work also depicts Messi's iconic gesture of pointing to the sky, a tribute to his grandmother who played a pivotal role in shaping his football career.
For football enthusiasts, this monument is expected to become a must-visit new destination when travelling to Argentina, complementing the various historic sites linked to La Pulga's professional journey.
"He is Argentina's natural ambassador. For me this holds enormous meaning, not just as an artist but as an Argentine," stated Aldo Beroisa.
Patagonia itself has long been recognised as one of Argentina's most spectacular tourist regions. Already famous for its breathtaking mountain landscapes, lakes and vast open plains, the area now offers an additional draw for sports-focused travellers.
Lessons Learned From Previous Messi Statues
This latest monument is not the first statue ever constructed in honour of Lionel Messi.
Previously, a Messi statue was erected in Kolkata, India during a promotional tour the star attended the previous year. That monument was ultimately dismantled after it was found to lack adequate structural safety.
Argentina also previously unveiled a Messi statue in Buenos Aires in 2016. Unfortunately that work fell victim to vandalism and theft, with multiple sections including its head, hands and torso reported stolen.
Drawing from these past incidents, the new Patagonia monument was built with a far more robust structure, designed to stand as a long-term permanent tourist landmark.
Messi Continues To Make History
The inauguration of this giant statue coincided with a period where Lionel Messi once again wrote new history with the Argentina national team.
Ahead of his 39th birthday, the Albiceleste captain officially became the all-time top goalscorer in World Cup history, recording his 18th World Cup goal during the 2026 tournament to surpass the previous record held by German legend Miroslav Klose.
The combination of Messi's historic on-field achievements and this grand monument in Patagonia further cements his status as one of the greatest icons in the history of global sport.
For travellers planning a trip to Argentina, the Lionel Messi statue is now a must-visit stop alongside classic destinations including Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls, and Patagonia's world-famous scenic mountain ranges. This blend of natural tourism and football heritage makes a visit to Argentina an even more memorable experience for sports fans.
