Bogor - Ahead of the crucial FIFA Matchday fixtures, tactics and player selection decisions by Indonesia National Team Head Coach John Herdman remain under intense public scrutiny. During a recent podcast recording held at ITSMe Studio, Sentul, Bogor on 3 June 2026, two national football analysts Ronny Pangemanan (known locally as Bung Ropan) and Erwin Fitriansyah broke down the English coach's preparations in depth ahead of upcoming matches against Oman and Mozambique.

Hosted by Gilang Respaty and Yatna, this discussion specifically focused on Herdman's final 23-player squad call-up for the June 2026 international football window.

The 5 June fixture against Oman is viewed as a proper test of the Garuda squad's depth. With the Middle Eastern side currently ranked in the 70s on the FIFA world rankings, their quality cannot be dismissed lightly. For this reason, Bung Ropan explicitly warned Herdman against experimenting with formations, especially when structuring the defensive line following Jay Idzes' unavailability for selection.

The defence line is projected to be built around the core partnership of Rizky Ridho, Elkan Baggott and Justin Hubner, with Kevin Diks as the preferred option at right back. A heated point of debate however surrounds Herdman's decision to call up players such as Muhammad Ferarri, who has recorded extremely limited playing minutes at club level. This choice is widely criticised given the omission of Komang Teguh, a regular starting defender currently in strong competitive league form, who was not selected for the squad.

"When FIFA ranking points are on the line, John Herdman needs to be reminded not to take unnecessary gambles. He must field the best available Players that we have right now," Bung Ropan stated firmly regarding this squad selection.

Meanwhile, for the 9 June fixture against Mozambique, Erwin Fitriansyah assessed that selecting this 101st ranked African opponent was a deliberate strategic call. Herdman intentionally sought out a strong, untested opposition for the Garuda squad to create a 'surprise challenge' effect. Having only recently taken charge of official matches, the coach is using this international break to directly evaluate the full potential of all his players as part of long term preparations for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

Outside the senior team controversy, the podcast also analysed the Indonesia U-19 National Team under Nova Arianto competing at the 2026 AFF U-19 Cup. As defending champions, this youth squad carries very high public expectations. The young Garuda side has been bolstered by promising talents including Welber Jardim, Amar Brkic, and 17 year old defender Matthew Baker - who was first called up to train with the senior national squad before joining the U-19 setup.

The U-19 team's key strategy to secure top place in their group is to maximise their 4 June fixture against Timor Leste to score as many goals as possible. This goal difference buffer will be critical to finish above Vietnam in the standings, before the two sides face off in the decisive final group match.

With properly prepared strategies from John Herdman for the senior side and Nova Arianto for the youth setup, Indonesia's national football teams are expected to deliver effective, disciplined performances and collect positive overall results across all fixtures this week.
