Manchester United has finally taken a step marking a new direction for the club for the remainder of this season. The Red Devils have officially appointed Michael Carrick as manager until the end of the 2025/26 season.

The announcement was made by the club on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, also confirming Carrick will continue in the interim manager role following the sacking of Ruben Amorim in early January.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Carrick as first-team coach," stated MU on the club's official website.

For Old Trafford, this is not merely a technical appointment but the return of a figure who deeply understands the club's identity. Not just in the dressing room but also the global pressure that accompanies it.

No Stranger to the Theatre of Dreams

Carrick is no stranger to the Theatre of Dreams. He was part of Manchester United's golden era as a player, making 464 appearances and collecting Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, and FIFA Club World Cup titles.

After hanging up his boots in 2018, Carrick entered the coaching world under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

When Solskjaer departed, Carrick briefly took charge as interim coach and left a positive impression.

That experience was further enriched when he became manager of Middlesbrough in October 2022 for two and a half years, before returning to Manchester United.

Now, Carrick will lead the MU squad until the end of the 2025/26 season. He emphasized that the responsibility of leading MU is an honour.

"I know what it takes to succeed here. My focus now is on helping the players reach the standards we expect at this extraordinary club, and I am confident this squad is more than capable of achieving that," he said.

Belief in the Squad and Process

Carrick stressed that he has not come with a revolutionary agenda, but rather with the belief that the team's foundation is strong enough to build upon.

He said he has worked with some of the players before and has continued to follow the team's progress in recent years.

Therefore, he has full belief in their talent, dedication, and ability to achieve success.

"There is still much to fight for this season. We are ready to bring all the elements together and deliver performances worthy of the incredible support from our fans," he stated.

Management Support

MU's sporting director, Jason Wilcox, emphasized that this decision is not merely sentimental, but strategic.

“Michael is an excellent manager and understands exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United. He is ready to lead a group of talented and highly determined players for the rest of this season, as the club works to build sustained success,” he said.

Manchester United also expressed appreciation to Darren Fletcher who led the team during the brief transitional period.

Fletcher now returns to his role as U-18 team manager, with the important mandate of preparing the next generation to be ready to compete at the highest level.
