A new era of Indonesian football officially begins with the arrival of John Herdman. As the new Indonesian National Team Coach, this Canadian man shoulders high expectations to continue the positive trend built by his predecessor, Shin Tae-yong (STY).

Inheriting High Standards from the Previous Era

Football observer, Ronny Pangemanan, popularly known as Bung Ropan, provided an interesting analysis regarding this coaching transition. According to him, John Herdman is in a highly advantageous position because he doesn't need to start everything from scratch. The team foundation left by STY is already at a very competitive level.

"Shin Tae-yong has raised the standard of Indonesian Football to a much higher level. The process undergone from the ground up is now yielding results in the form of a significant FIFA Ranking increase," stated Bung Ropan during a discussion session on the YouTube channel ISTME @indotravelsport, hosted by Raisha Ramadhani.

A Promising Squad Depth

One crucial point discussed was the quality of player material. Bung Ropan emphasized that the current Indonesian National Team Coach has a pool of at least 23 to 25 quality players ready for battle. The existence of this luxury squad provides flexibility for John Herdman to devise strategies without the headache of searching for new talent from scratch.

Roadmap Towards Asian and World Glory

Herdman's task flow begins with the FIFA Matchday 2026 agenda. This test tournament will serve as an adaptation platform for the coach before stepping onto more prestigious stages.

Interestingly, because Indonesia is already confirmed to qualify directly for the 2027 Asian Cup, Herdman has a longer and more thorough preparation time. The target of reaching the Quarter-Finals of the 2027 Asian Cup is considered a realistic goal given the current player composition.

If that target is achieved, it will become valuable capital for John Herdman to pursue the biggest dream of all Indonesians: qualifying for the 2030 World Cup Qualifiers. With a combination of the established system and new technical touches, optimism that the Garuda will fly higher is now growing stronger.
