Malaysia U-23 coach Nafuzi Zain identified Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand as major forces in the 2025 SEA Games. Nevertheless, he remains confident his young squad can put up a strong challenge.

He acknowledges a significant challenge awaits his team in the Southeast Asian sporting event, after the draw placed Malaysia in a group that cannot be considered easy.

Malaysia U-23 is grouped in Group B alongside Vietnam, the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup champions, and Laos. Just from these three teams, it's clear the path for the young Harimau Malaya squad won't be straightforward.

“What I see is we're not in an easy group. For me, this is a tough and challenging path,” stated Nafuzi as quoted by Makan Bola.

Despite his caution, Nafuzi maintains confidence in his team. He's also analyzing patterns and opportunities his squad could exploit.

He believes that although Vietnam enters as champions, they don't display a playing style vastly different from Malaysia U-23. Malaysia aims to leverage this similarity to challenge Southeast Asia's dominant teams, including when facing Vietnam.

“I think in terms of gameplay, the difference isn't too significant. Hopefully, with our players and competitive playing style, it might not be easy for Vietnam to face us, I believe Insya Allah,” Nafuzi said.

Facing ASEAN's Strong Trio

In Nafuzi's view, the 2025 SEA Games isn't just about medals, but also a test of mental fortitude and consistency. He named Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand as the benchmark teams defining regional strength.

For him, facing these teams is an opportunity to learn and measure the progress of Malaysia's youth squad.

“But crucially, in terms of our opportunities, avoiding the mistakes we make is paramount when facing strong teams like Vietnam, Indonesia, or Thailand. That's where we learn extensively in preparation for facing Vietnam later,” Nafuzi explained.

Indonesia in Malaysia's View

Notably, Nafuzi also highlighted Indonesia U-23 as a formidable team in the tournament. With recent outstanding achievements abroad and a roster of young players performing overseas, Indonesia is now regarded as on par with Vietnam and Thailand.

That's why, for Nafuzi, the 2025 SEA Games becomes a vital platform. Not only to test his team's capabilities, but also to demonstrate that Malaysia U-23 won't be mere participants.
