Japan National Football Team continues their positive run of form as preparations build ahead of the 2026 World Cup final tournament. Playing at the Japan National Stadium, Tokyo for the 2026 Kirin Challenge Cup friendly match on Sunday (31/5/2026), the Blue Samurai squad successfully secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Iceland.
This fixture was a critical agenda for head coach Hajime Moriyasu's side. Iceland was specifically chosen as the test opponent for their physical, solid playing style typical of Northern European teams. This tactical approach is considered identical to Sweden, one of the tough opponents Japan will face in the tournament group stage.

Despite controlling the flow of the game from the opening minutes, Japan was forced to work extremely hard to break down Iceland's tight defence. The away team's disciplined back line made it difficult for the Blue Samurai forward line to create clear golden chances. This deadlock in producing final third attacks resulted in a physical, tightly contested match within Iceland's defensive zone.
The home side's patience finally paid off shortly before full time. Exactly in the 87th minute, the deadlock was broken through a brilliant move by Koki Ogawa. Starting from an accurate cross by Yukinari Sugawara, the NEC Nijmegen striker sent a well directed header. The ball bounced off the goalpost before crossing the line, sealing the dramatic 1-0 win for Japan that held until the final whistle.
Impressive Record & Group F Focus
This victory further confirms Japan's outstanding form, now recording six consecutive wins in international matches. Remarkably, they have won all five of their most recent fixtures without conceding a single goal (clean sheet). This run of results builds on their previous positive record that saw them defeat strong sides including Brazil, Ghana, Bolivia, Scotland and England.
For the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Japan are drawn in Group F and will face tight competition against the Netherlands, Tunisia and Sweden. After concluding this friendly match in Tokyo, Moriyasu's squad is scheduled to depart directly for the United States on 2 June. As final tactical preparation and acclimatisation steps, the team will hold an open training session at Geodis Park, Nashville on 8 June 2026
