Indonesian Men's Singles Alwi Farhan, alongside Men's Doubles pair Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, have confirmed their qualification to the quarter-final round of Singapore Open 2026. Their impressive performance at the Singapore Indoor Stadium showed an increasingly mature competitive mindset.
Alwi Farhan successfully knocked out China's top seed Shi Yu Qi in the Round of 16 through a three-game battle with final scores 21-16, 19-21, 21-14.
This victory stands as one of the biggest career achievements for the 21-year-old shuttler, given that Shi Yu Qi holds the current men's singles World Number 1 ranking.

"Of course I am happy, I am also proud to get this experience playing against the world's top ranked player. But this journey is not over yet, there are still critical upcoming rounds. I have to remain focused," stated Alwi after the match, as quoted from PBSI official press release.
This win is even more meaningful as Alwi had been under pressure after failing to help Indonesia qualify for the knockout stage of Thomas Cup 2026.
That experience however became a turning point that built stronger mental resilience for him on court.
Alwi demonstrated an adjusted game approach when facing Shi Yu Qi. While he previously often rushed to finish points aggressively, this time he remained calm and patient to control the match rhythm.
"I have learned this lesson before: when I force the win too hard, I end up making blunders. So after losing the second game, I tried to calm down, reset my focus. I knew the match was not finished and we still had equal chance to win," Alwi added.
For the quarter-final round, the 2025 Macau Open champion will face Japanese men's singles player Kodai Naraoka on Friday 29 May.
Fajar/Fikri Refuse To Be Burdened By Expectations

"Today we played according to our pre-planned game strategy, we successfully implemented the game patterns we prepared for this Danish pair," said Fajar in the PBSI official statement.
Fajar revealed that staying calm was the key factor for their victory over the Danish pair, who had previously won the Malaysia Masters title.
Meanwhile Fikri assessed that successfully neutralising the opponents' service patterns became the main winning key for this match.
In the quarter-final round, Indonesia's 3rd seeded pair will face Malaysian duo Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin.
"I have faced them many times before, both when paired with Rian and now with Fikri. They are experienced players, they rarely make unforced errors. We will study all their match patterns again together with our coaches and video analysts," stated Fajar.
Fikri confirmed that the pair will not let high public expectations burden them, choosing instead to focus one match at a time.
"Pressure will always be there for us, but we have to shift our mindset and turn this into motivation. We just need to be better prepared for the next match, and face whoever comes our way," concluded Fikri.
