Amid global exchange rate fluctuations, Southeast Asia reaffirms itself as a paradise for budget travelers. A survey by Expedia placed three cities in the region as the most affordable destinations for travelers from the United States (US).

Interestingly, from the list of 10 global cities, not a single entry came from Indonesia. The three cities featured are Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Bangkok (Thailand), and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Low Cost, Authentic Experience

The survey by one of the world's largest US-based online Travel agencies recorded tourists spending approximately US$150 per night on average across these three cities.

With favorable dollar exchange rates and relatively low local living costs, US tourists experience deeper immersion during their explorations.

Yet the appeal extends beyond mere affordability.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the pulse of life resonates from sidewalks to narrow alleyways. The city has long attracted travelers through its rich street food culture, vibrant nightlife, and urban energy.

Meanwhile, Bangkok offers captivating contrasts—from gold-layered temples to modern shopping centers. More than a destination, it delivers a multisensory experience where tradition and modernity coexist within a single landscape.

Kuala Lumpur transforms journeys into cultural dialogues. The fusion of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences creates harmony reflected in architecture, festivals, and diverse cuisine.

Indonesia Absent, Southeast Asia Still Shines

Indonesia's absence from the list raises questions, particularly given its wealth of equally captivating destinations.

However, for US tourist affordability metrics—accommodation costs, transportation expenses, and currency exchange rates—prove decisive factors.

Globally, Salvador, Brazil, ranked as the most affordable city for US tourists.

Nevertheless, Southeast Asia remains a compelling landscape where every dollar unlocks authentic, unforgettable experiences beyond mere destinations.
