Mexico has been officially appointed by UN Tourism to host the World Sports Tourism Congress. This moment marks a major step for the country on the global Sports Tourism map.
Mexico’s designation as host represents the event's first expansion outside Europe. Previously, the congress was held in two European countries: Spain and Croatia.
Mexico’s appointment sends a strong signal that the country is now on the primary radar as a new hub for global Sports Tourism development.

With its combination of infrastructure, experience hosting international events, and government strategy, Mexico is positioned as a key player in this industry.
The Minister of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, highlighted the event’s broad impact beyond sports to include economic and social dimensions.
“Hosting the World Congress is Mexico’s opportunity to showcase its greatness to the world, but more crucially, to translate tourism into well-being for our people. Sports tourism not only attracts visitors, generates investment, and boosts our local economy—it also creates opportunities, jobs, and stronger communities,” she emphasized.
This decision opens strategic opportunities for new investment, increased international events, and strengthened global networks between public and private sectors.
Alfonso Zegbe stressed the vital role of UN Tourism in connecting diverse sectors.
“UN Tourism is a key international organization bridging national representation with private sector and associations. It pioneers by transcending governmental roles: engaging businesses, organizations, and academia. Most importantly, it delivers tangible impact,” he explained.
Industry support comes from CONCANACO SERVYTUR. President Octavio de la Torre views this year as pivotal for Mexico’s global standing.
“In this significant year for Mexico globally, sports tourism can be a genuine lever for destination development, local economies, and family businesses,” he stated.
The signing of the cooperation agreement with UN Tourism formally establishes the congress’s foundation.
This extends beyond a single event, serving as a long-term strategy to fortify Mexico’s position in global Sports Diplomacy.
With this momentum, Mexico not only prepares to host but also aspires to lead world sports tourism.(Sectur)
