Bogor - Zaenal Arief, or familiarly known as "Abo", is the embodiment of sharpness and charisma on the front lines of Persib Bandung. However, long before his name was cheered by tens of thousands of Bobotoh (Persib supporters), this young man from Cikajang, Garut, nearly buried his dream. At the age of 16, he had to swallow the bitter pill of being rejected by Persigar Garut in selections four times. Fortunately, Abo was equipped with a "Steel Mentality". On the fifth attempt, the door that was once tightly shut finally opened, becoming a stepping stone towards glory with Persita Tangerang, eventually transforming him into an eternal icon of Persib and a pillar of the Indonesian National Team.
In an in-depth dialogue on the YouTube channel @Indotravelsport with host Syafira, the legend revealed another side of his dramatic career. One of the most heroic memories was the El Clasico match against Persija in 2006. Despite a torn temple and being drenched in blood, Abo insisted on staying on the pitch until he managed to slot home a goal via a free-kick execution in the final minutes. Besides that tenacity, he is also remembered for a spectacular somersault goal he named "Balik Bandung" (Bandung Flip)—an action he admitted was born from pure instinct without specific training. However, the romance on the green field ended bitterly due to a severe knee injury that forced him into early retirement, a consequence of the limited medical technology at the time.
Observing the face of modern Football, Kang Abo sees significant changes. To Syafira, he emphasized that today's players must possess speed in decision-making if they want to survive at the highest level. He also praised the current Persib management, which he assessed as increasingly professional and harmonious with the Bobotoh. Behind fierce rivalries on the field, Abo openly revealed his close friendship with Persija icon, Bambang Pamungkas. For him, professionalism must always stand above club ego for the glory of the Merah Putih (Red and White, Indonesian flag/national team). He also expressed high optimism for John Herdman's leadership of the Garuda (Indonesian National Team) squad, focused on fixing the players' mentality.
Today, the legend's life has entered a new chapter. Although he has served as a Civil Servant (PNS), his passion for football has never extinguished. Zaenal Arief has chosen a quiet path by dedicating himself to Youth Development in West Java. With a coaching license in hand, he continues to seek out talented youngsters from remote areas, ensuring that the regeneration of footballers from the Pasundan land will continue to be born for the future of Indonesian Football.
