Japan's U-23 national team reaffirmed its dominance at the Asian level by securing the Championship title at the U-23 Asian Cup. In the final match held at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium, Jeddah on Saturday (24/1), Japan displayed superiority to crush China with a convincing 4-0 scoreline.
This result wasn't merely a victory in the pinnacle match but also etched history. Japan became the first team to win the U-23 Asian Cup three times, confirming the consistency of their youth development system.
From the opening minutes, Japan immediately seized control of the game. High pressing, rapid ball circulation, and positional discipline left China struggling to escape pressure and unable to develop effective attacking patterns.
Japan's breakthrough came in the 12th minute through Yuto Ozeki. The goal originated from a scramble in the penalty box after a shot deflected off Chinese defender Peng Xiao. Ozeki capitalized on the loose ball in the danger area, firing a shot that deceived Goalkeeper Li Hao. After VAR review, the goal stood.
Japan's dominance continued eight minutes later. Kosei Ogura showcased individual quality by dispossessing an opponent in their defensive third, dribbling past one defender, and unleashing a powerful shot into the far corner. This goal further highlighted the gulf in quality between the teams.
China attempted to respond with direct long-ball approaches, but Japan's organized defense easily neutralized these efforts. By halftime, Japan led 2-0 with twice as many shots as China.
Entering the second half, Japan maintained intensity. Their control persisted until they extended the lead in the 57th minute. A penalty was awarded after Liu Haofan was adjudged to handle the ball in the box. Ryunosuke Sato calmly converted the spot-kick.
China briefly sparked hope with a 68th-minute goal, but it was disallowed for offside – a decision that shattered their momentum.
Japan sealed absolute victory in the 76th minute when Kosei Ogura's shot from outside the box deflected off a Chinese defender and looped into the net, capping their dominant final performance.
Until the final whistle, Japan controlled proceedings without allowing China meaningful opportunities. This triumph confirms Japan as the benchmark for Asian Football strength at U-23 level, both tactically and mentally, with superior individual player quality.
