A personal approach was John Herdman's first step in building the foundation of his new era with the Indonesian National Team. This was reflected in the admission of Persija Jakarta player Jordi Amat, who revealed the content of his conversation with the new Garuda coach long before Herdman officially took charge from the sidelines.
Jordi Amat disclosed that communication with Herdman had been established since early January, before the English coach's appointment was officially announced to the public on January 13.
The conversation was simple, not about major targets or ambitions, but rather a personal approach to build trust.

"Regarding How I was feeling, whether I was doing well at Persija. And he mentioned wanting to attend the derby (against Persib Bandung), but postponed it. A few messages, he was very kind. Hoping we could meet each other as soon as possible," Jordi told reporters in the mixed zone of Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Friday, after Persija's 2-0 victory over Madura United in the Super League.
Jordi stated the communication occurred via WhatsApp. He gained the impression that Herdman wants to establish direct and personal relationships with his players.
This approach aligns with Herdman's own acknowledgment that he has communicated with National Team Players, including Jordi, since as far back as last Christmas.
Jordi's statement also confirms what Herdman shared during his official introduction as Indonesian National Team Coach.
At that time, Herdman emphasized that his initial communication with players wasn't focused on targets or achievement demands, but rather on greetings, self-introductions, and building rapport as a first step.
Herdman also began demonstrating his seriousness by directly monitoring domestic competition. He attended Persija Jakarta's match against Madura United, marking his first opportunity to watch a Super League game in person since arriving in Indonesia on January 10.
"I hope he (John Herdman) enjoyed the game," said Jordi.
Herdman's immediate agenda with the Indonesian National Team is the FIFA Series 2026 next March. Indonesia will host three invited teams: Bulgaria, Solomon Islands, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.
For Jordi Amat, who has recorded 19 appearances with the Indonesian National Team, the Herdman era brings new hope.
He aspires to be part of the first "Garuda Calling" squad under the leadership of the coach who successfully ended Canada's 36-year wait to return to the World Cup.
"I hope he is always successful here with the Indonesian national team. He has a very important job to do. And we will give our best on the field," said the former Swansea City defender.
