When quality of life becomes the primary measure of a city, Europe once again sets the global standard. ECA International's 2026 list of the world's most livable cities confirms the dominance of the Blue Continent, sweeping the top positions and offering a glimpse of balanced urban living.

In ECA International's latest Location Ratings, Bern, Switzerland was crowned the world's most livable city, outperforming hundreds of other global cities.

This assessment covers various fundamental aspects of urban life, from infrastructure and Air Quality to healthcare services, personal safety, and political stability.

ECA International's criteria include access to social networks, recreational facilities, housing and utilities, and climatic factors. These elements collectively shape the day-to-day living experience in a city.

Of the 275 cities analyzed, European cities showed remarkable dominance. 38 of the top 50 positions were occupied by European cities, with the entire top 10 dominated by the region.

"Europe's strong performance reflects decades of investment in clean environments, world-class healthcare, and infrastructure," ECA International told Time Out.

The report also highlights the stark contrast in quality of life between different world regions. No European city appeared in the bottom 50 list.

At the top of the list, Bern stands as an example blending history, nature, and modern governance.

Switzerland's de facto capital is built along the bends of the Aare River, featuring a 12th-century Old Town (Altstadt) now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For travelers wishing to experience Bern's rhythm of life, Freibad Marzili is an iconic destination.

This open-air bathing facility allows visitors to immerse themselves in the blue-green waters of the Aare River, a local tradition reflecting residents' closeness to nature.

Conversely, Kulturzentrum Reitschule offers the city's contemporary face as a venue for concerts, theater, and film screenings.

However, the comfort of living in European cities, particularly Switzerland, comes with a cost consequence. ECA International's list of livable cities overlaps significantly with lists of the world's most expensive cities, both in terms of rent and dining costs.

This fact confirms that high living standards often align with substantial expenses.

Nevertheless, for many, the appeal of stable, safe, and sustainable quality of life remains paramount.

ECA International's top 10 safest and most livable cities in the world 2025-2026:

1. Bern, Switzerland
2. Copenhagen, Denmark
3. Stavanger, Norway
4. Geneva, Switzerland
5. Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
6. The Hague, Netherlands
7. Vienna, Austria
8. Munich, Germany
9. Dublin, Ireland
10. Lisbon, Portugal

This list is not merely a ranking, but an inspiration map for cities worldwide, demonstrating that long-term investment in environment, health, and public spaces can shape truly livable urban life.
