The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially taken firm action against Indonesia after the government refused to grant visas to six Israeli athletes scheduled to compete in the 53rd World Artistic Gymnastics Championships (Jakarta Gymnastics 2025).
This decision led the IOC to issue four stringent recommendations with wide-ranging implications for the future hosting of international sporting events in Indonesia.
In a statement on its official website, the IOC stated that the Indonesian government's decision violated the fundamental principles of non-discrimination and political neutrality as outlined in the Olympic Charter.

KOI Chairman to Meet IOC in Switzerland to Discuss Israeli Athlete Visa Controversy
“Following the cancellation by the Indonesian government of visas for Israeli athletes for the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta, the IOC Executive Board (IOC EB) held a meeting online this week and discussed both this specific situation and the recurring global issue of athlete access to international competitions,” the IOC wrote in its official statement.
“This once again highlights the IOC’s fundamental position that all eligible athletes, teams and sports officials must be able to participate in international sports competitions and events without any discrimination from the host country,” the statement continued.
Four Stringent IOC Recommendations for Indonesia
Following the emergency meeting, the IOC issued four official recommendations forming the basis for provisional sanctions against Indonesia.
1. Indonesia's involvement in Olympic activities is suspended. The IOC decided to suspend all forms of dialogue and cooperation with the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) regarding the organization of the Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, or sports conferences until written guarantees are received from the Indonesian government that all participants, regardless of nationality, will be accepted in Indonesian territory.
2. Temporary ban on hosting international championships in Indonesia. The IOC recommends to all international sports federations not to hold events, tournaments, or official meetings in Indonesia until non-discriminatory guarantees are provided by the government.
This measure is feared to directly impact several world sporting events already planned in the country.
3. Re-evaluation of Indonesia's membership status in the Olympic Movement. The IOC will review Indonesia's position as part of the Olympic Movement, especially if the government does not immediately provide clarification and commitment on implementing universal Olympic principles.
4. Strong warning regarding violation of political neutrality principle. The IOC emphasized that the decision to refuse visas on political grounds contradicts the Olympic Charter and constitutes a serious violation of the values of sportsmanship and freedom of competition.
Root of the Problem: Visa Denial for Israeli Athletes
This controversy began when the Indonesian government failed to issue visas for six Israeli athletes scheduled to compete at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta on October 19–25, 2025.
The Israel Gymnastics Federation appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but it was rejected. As a result, the athletes were unable to participate in Jakarta.
The IOC described Indonesia's move as an action that "threatens the fundamental values of the Olympic Movement", as refusing athletes based on their country of origin is considered contrary to the spirit of global unity through sport.
Long-Term Impact: Indonesia's Sporting Image and Diplomacy Threatened
The IOC's decision has the potential to affect Indonesia's sporting reputation in the eyes of the world. If the ban on hosting international events is fully implemented, Indonesia could lose its credibility as a host for major championships.
Previously, Indonesia faced a similar situation when FIFA revoked its hosting rights for the 2023 U-20 World Cup, also due to the refusal of Israel's team participation. Now, history seems to be repeating itself on the Olympic stage.
