Noussair Mazraoui States Morocco's Victory Over the Netherlands is Proof of the Atlas Lions' Strength

Morocco national team defender Noussair Mazraoui stated that their dramatic victory over the Netherlands in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 proves his country is now rightfully recognised as one of the elite forces in global football.

Morocco sealed their place in the Round of 16 after eliminating the Netherlands via a 3-2 penalty shootout. The match had previously finished 1-1 at the end of extra time.

The side nicknamed the Atlas Lions fell behind when Cody Gakpo put the Netherlands ahead in the 72nd minute. However, Morocco demonstrated unbreakable resolve as Issa Diop netted the equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time. That goal forced extra time before the tie was ultimately decided from the penalty spot.

"The way we were able to win today is massive validation for us as a national team, that is for certain," Mazraoui stated after the match, in comments published on the official FIFA website, as monitored from Jakarta on Tuesday 30 June 2026.

During the penalty shootout, the Netherlands wasted their chances as Justin Kluivert, Quentin Timber and Crysencio Summerville all failed to convert their spot kicks.

For Morocco, only Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi missed their penalties.

Ismael Saibari was Morocco's match hero. His successful strike as the fifth penalty taker beat goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to confirm the Atlas Lions' progression to the 2026 World Cup Round of 16.

Despite claiming the victory, Mazraoui acknowledged the match against the Netherlands was an extremely tough contest, given the high quality of the opposition.

"[Netherlands] are one of the best opponents you can face anywhere in world football. They are a top 10 ranked national side, in my opinion one of the genuine contenders to win this World Cup," he added.

Morocco will next face tournament co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16. Canada qualified for this stage after knocking out South Africa.

Despite being one of the three host nations, Canada will not play this fixture on home soil. This Round of 16 match is scheduled to take place at AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas, United States on Sunday 5 July 2026 WIB.
