Spain National Team failed to capitalise on their favourite status as they kicked off their 2026 World Cup Group H campaign. Facing tournament debutants Cape Verde, La Furia Roja were forced to settle for a 0-0 Draw after repeatedly failing to break through the opposition defence.
This result at the Atlanta Stadium on Monday night stands as one of the biggest shocks of the tournament's opening phase. As reigning European champions and strong group title contenders, Spain dropped two crucial points here.
Meanwhile Cape Verde celebrate this valuable single point, which keeps their hopes alive of qualifying for the Round of 32.

Right from the first whistle, Luis de la Fuente's side took full control of the match. With nearly 80% ball possession, Spain laid siege to Cape Verde's compact defensive line.
Pedri's 13th minute cross was cleared away by Cape Verde defender Pico Lopes just before it could reach any waiting attacker inside the penalty box.
Spain's domination continued. In the 30th minute, Marc Cucurella struck a volley from inside the penalty area which flew just over the crossbar.
Despite spending most of the match defending, Cape Verde created a threat in the 37th minute. Capitalising on an error from Rodri, Dailon Livramento unleashed a long range shot which drifted wide of the target.
Another chance fell for Spain in the 41st minute. Ferran Torres struck a close range effort which bounced off the crossbar. Mikel Oyarzabal got on the end of the rebound with a header, only for it to be denied by veteran Goalkeeper Vozinha.
The 42 year old shot stopper showed his class once again to save subsequent attempts from Ferran Torres and Aymeric Laporte. The score remained 0-0 going into half time.
As the second half got underway, Spain continued to probe for gaps to unlock the opposition defence, while Cape Verde maintained their highly disciplined defensive shape.
Fabian Ruiz went close with a header in the 58th minute, but still could not break the deadlock.
Luis de la Fuente brought on wonderkid Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute. The introduction of the young Barcelona player injected fresh energy into Spain's attacking line.
Yamal created multiple chances and opened up space on the wing, but the elusive winning goal still would not come.
Spain's best opportunity arrived in the 89th minute. Dani Olmo played a perfect pass to Mikel Oyarzabal who was in an ideal goalscoring position, but Oyarzabal's shot was blocked by Pico Lopes right on the goal line.
When the final whistle blew, Spain's total domination had not translated into a single goal. Cape Verde successfully walked away with a precious point.
