The Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), Erick Thohir, apologized to all Indonesian people after the national team failed to advance to the 2026 World Cup. In the fourth round of Asian zone qualifying, Indonesia had to acknowledge Iraq's superiority with a narrow 0-1 score at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, Jeddah, Sunday, October 12, 2025, early morning Western Indonesian Time.
"We apologize that the dream (of Indonesia) to enter the 2026 World Cup has not been realized," wrote Erick Thohir on his social media account.
This defeat officially halted the Garuda squad's journey. Despite a brave performance and putting up a fierce fight, the sole goal from Iraqi midfielder Zidane Iqbal in the 75th minute made the difference and buried Indonesia's hopes of appearing in the world's biggest football event.

The Struggle is Not Over
Although the result did not meet expectations, Indonesia's performance under Patrick Kluivert's guidance still received much appreciation. The young Garuda squad showed high fighting spirit, even putting pressure in several crucial moments throughout the match.
Unfortunately, this became the second consecutive defeat after Indonesia previously had to acknowledge Saudi Arabia's superiority with a 2-3 score. These two results placed Indonesia at the bottom of Group B without points, simultaneously closing the opportunity to qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals.
Meanwhile, the victory brought Iraq closer to the ticket to the United States, Mexico, and Canada. With three points from one match, they now occupy second place in the provisional Group B standings.
Appreciation for Supporters and Players
Amid the disappointment, Erick Thohir still gave high appreciation to the players, coaches, and supporters who have continuously supported the Garuda's struggle so far.
"For the first time in history, Indonesia has been able to advance this far," wrote Erick.
That statement reflects PSSI's spirit of optimism to continue building a stronger national football foundation. Because, this achievement indeed becomes a new milestone in the long journey of the Indonesian national team at the international level.
Erick emphasized that the struggle is not over. He believes that the experience in this qualification will be an important fuel to look towards a brighter future for Indonesian football.
