For those planning to explore the beauty of the sea in Labuan Bajo in the near future, important news must be noted. Tourist boat sailing activities in this area are temporarily closed following potential Extreme Weather predicted in the waters of West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara.

This temporary closure was announced by the Harbor Master and Port Authority Office (KSOP) Class III Labuan Bajo as an anticipatory measure for the safety of tourists, ship crews, and coastal communities.

“This temporary closure applies to all waters of West Manggarai,” said Stephanus Risdiyanto, Head of KSOP Class III Labuan Bajo, when contacted in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

This means all popular routes usually taken by tourist boats – from trips to Padar Island, Komodo Island, Pink Beach, to surrounding waters – are temporarily not serving sailings, including speedboats and daily tourist boats.

Why is it Closed? The Basis for Consideration

According to Stephanus, this policy was officially communicated through a Notice to Mariners (NtM) to ship captains. The NtM was issued on December 29, 2025, responding to an Extreme Weather early warning.

This sailing ban refers to wave height forecast data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) with reference number No.B/ME.01.02/PDGTI29/DMM/XII/2025 dated December 29, 2025.

“Sailing approval letter (SPB) services for all tourist boats (including speedboats) are temporarily closed until weather conditions improve,” he stated.

For Travelers, this means no official sailing permits will be issued, even if the weather momentarily appears clear. High waves and strong currents can emerge suddenly, especially in Labuan Bajo’s open waters.

Important Recommendations for Captains and Tourism Operators

Besides suspending sailings, KSOP issued crucial recommendations to prevent maritime accidents. Captains must ensure vessels remain seaworthy and immediately seek shelter if weather deteriorates.

“Notify other vessels if you become aware of weather hazards,” he said.

Captains are also instructed to anchor or moor in areas protected from high waves and strong currents. Vessels must remain manned with engines on standby.

“Coordinate with the Harbor Master and Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency) if weather conditions worsen,” he added.

Tips for Travelers: Stay Safe & Have Fun

Although sailing is suspended, holidays in Labuan Bajo needn’t be canceled entirely. Travelers can still explore Labuan Bajo town and local cuisine, enjoy sunsets at Bukit Cinta or Puncak Sylvia, have staycations with sea views, or rearrange Island Hopping itineraries for when weather improves.

This temporary closure demonstrates that tourist safety remains the top priority at this super Premium Destination.
